Drug Abuse Centers
There are a number of
reasons why someone turns to
drugs and alcohol, it could
be to release stress or
relax, it might be to escape
from some sort of trauma or
due to many other
circumstances. Substance
abuse is a rampant problem
all over the US and the
situation shows no signs of
abating or going away. When
a person exhibits signs and
symptoms of an addiction to
drugs and alcohol, the best
way to handle the issue is
through entering into an
addiction rehab center for
treatment.
An
addiction, whether it is to
drugs or alcohol or both, is
characterized by intense and
overwhelming cravings and
compulsive use, even in
spite of negative
consequences. While the
road to becoming addicted to
alcohol or drugs is
voluntary, over time the
individual is unable to stop
using voluntarily as
substance abuse becomes
habitual. Alcohol and drug
abuse are diseases of the
brain and affect the reward
and motivation systems, and
learning and memory centers,
and an addict has no control
of their inhibitions.
Because
addiction has so many
dimensions and causes
problems in so many areas of
a person’s life, treatment
is not that simple. An
addiction rehab center will
incorporate many dimensions
and each one is designed to
address the various facets
of the disease. Addiction
rehabilitation must help a
person stop using drugs and
alcohol, maintain a
substance-free lifestyle and
be effective in allowing the
individual to function on a
normal level with the family
and in society as well.
Because addiction and
alcoholism are chronic and
progressive in nature,
people cannot just stop
using or drinking and expect
to be “cured.”
